Dr. Porten started her academic journey by earning her undergraduate, doctoral, and public health degrees from Northwestern University. During medical school, she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and participated in a Howard Hughes Medical Institute-NIH Research Scholars fellowship. She completed her urology residency training at UCSF, where she received the Julius R. Krevans Award for Clinical Excellence, and later completed her Urologic Oncology Fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center, where she was awarded the John Quale Travel Fellowship for her research in bladder cancer.

Dr. Porten is the Program Director for the Urologic Oncology Fellowship Program at UCSF and is a Society of Urologic Oncology Board of Director – Member at Large. She is an active participant in several professional organizations, including the American Urological Association (AUA), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), Society of Women in Urology (SWIU), Society of Urologic Oncology (SUO), and the Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network (BCAN).

Dr. Porten's clinical and research interest primarily centers on the diagnosis and management of urothelial carcinoma, bladder, and upper tract disease, aiming to use genomic techniques to understand the biologic basis of these cancers. In studying the biologic basis of urothelial carcinoma using genomic techniques, she hopes to develop new tests and novel therapeutics to bring personalized medicine to patients with bladder cancer.
